Arqueología Industrial. Testimonios de la memoria Recovery and use of industrial heritage. The article deals with the necessity of making wider the concept of cultural heritage in order to include in it the remains of the industrial era. The author reviews the historical evolution of heritage concept from an artistic and aesthetic valuation into a newer one based on antiquity and interest for the study of History. From a methodological point of view, the author also analyses the industrial heritage as a local development factor in the case of a succesful management and a reutilization devoted to cultural and touristic goals.
The industrial architecture: from a machine shop
to a Jack-in-the-box Sobrino Simal analyses in this paper the current state of industrial heritage in Spain remarking the main lacks that affect its urgent preservation. The article also gives a large and complete list of the most significant examples of restored industrial buildings in Spain, making a distinction between those that still keep their industrial character and those devoted to a new use, mainly linked to cultural activities.
Restoring New Lanark The village of New Lanark (Scotland) is the best example of utopic industrial settlement. Designed and directed by Robert Owen, it was founded in 1785 as a water-powered cotton spinning settlement and remained in production until 1968. New Lanark suffered a longterm programme of restoration and development with the purpose of change it into an important tourist attraction place. Hotels, visitor centres, and exhibitions have been created in the industrial area of the village which attracts international attention. The natural beauty of the site helped New Lanark to be nowadays a succesful restored tourist place.
Industrial archaeology in Portugal Lopes Cordeiro draws up in this paper a complete balance of the process of industrialization in Portugal and its archaeological remains, analysing the different policies in order to preserve and protect the portuguese industrial archaeology. The article offers therefore an excellent and complete picture of the current atate of works on this heritage and of new projects for the future.
Conservation, assessmente, recovery of mining heritage
in Belgium. An attempted balance. Patrick Viaene draws up a balance of the works developed in Belgium in
the field of mining heritage recovery, specially the ones that take place
in Wallonia and Flandes areas. The author reviews in depth the steps taken
in order to create different mining and iron museums, and the achievement
of the «protected sites» declaration according to the historical and cultural
interest.
The inventory task of industrial heritage in France.
A model of investigation, protection and spreading As a model of methodological guide for further works, this paper offers the french work system carried out by the Inventory Service related to industrial heritage. Opening with the history of this cultural state institution, the author explains the process of social awareness of the value of industrial heritage, remarking some landsmarks. The inclusion of this new discipline in the inventory task and the method applied, as well as the systems used for its knowledge, complete the article which shows the modelic achievements of these cataloguing works.
Industrial heritage, locations, regenarations: a
new geography One of the most worrying issues linked to the menaced industrial heritage equipments are the so called «industrial wastes», large abandoned and destructed areas, that revail the obvious collapse of workers culture and whict have became a real challenge for local, regional and national establishments. Feliu reviews the strategies developped in different countries about these difficult waste spaces, and, at the same time, suggests different ways forward a more suitable reutilization, for example fluvial and thematic parks.
Asturias: industrial heritage and cultural tourism.
New resources for old structures Industrial heritage is no more a hindrance but a cultural good. Asturias, a heavily industrialised region which has suffered a devastating crisis, must restore its heritage to avoid demolition and oblivion. The cultural tourism in Asturias, from 19th featured in travel journals, inserts industrial itineraries as economic resources thanks to a new concept of community development for 20th century. Territorial development strategies must drive ecnomic and social politics in order to preserve industrial, natural and cultural heritage.
Industrial heritage and territorial order
It doesnt exist yet a legislation protecting in a satisfying way the different elements of industrial heritage. It is necessary to take into account the importance of preserving the elements of industrial heritage inserted in their natural, social, economic and cultural environment, so that they can contribute to the territorial development of underprivileged areas. The European Chart for the territorial order of 1983 responds to this spirit of continuous development and balanced space organization.
Natural heritage protection In 1988 the region of Somiedo was declared the First Asturian Natural Park. Ten years after, it can be verified that this particular fact has implied an economic catalyst, compatible with the extraordinary natural resources contained in it, as well as the population has got also involved in the protection of their own resources. In the other hand, Somiedo has an important industrial heritage that must be preserved and promoted as an essential part of Somiedo Natural Park.
Relationships between natural and industrial heritage
and economy This paper is an approach to the different ways that industrialization took place in Colonia department, in Uruguay. The author distinguishes in this region two completely different types of economic development dependeing on different relationships with the natural resources ( more or less predatoring), as well as on national or foreigner influence of management and workers. One of the types is the Conchillas settlement and the other is Puerto Sauce industrial model.
Steam engines, a living heritage in Cuba This paper reviews the presence of railway in Cuba, where on 19th November, 1837, the first section between La Habana and Bejucal was opened. Later on, the development of railway would come linked to the flourishing of sugar industry. Nowadays, Cuba owns one of the most important railway heritage -engines and buildings- that amazingly are still in work, and among which the american engines are the most attractive. Since some years ago, the Cuban government has promoted actions directed towards the preservation and assesment of a good part of this heritage.
Pedro Marrero "La Tropical" Brewery Pedro Marrero «La Tropical» brewery was founded in 1888 as an ice factory, which later on became a brewery and malt factory due to market exigencies. The article analyses the history and evolution of the factory and, besides that, it offers a sentimental story explained by the oldest employee working in the factory at the present. Among the values of «La Tropical» as a whole, the beautiful gardens stand out for the perfect state of conservation.
Matahambre, a mining heritage This article summarizes the history of copper mines of Matahambre sited
on cuban region of Pinar del Río. The mine started its works in 1912 and
was closed in 1997. Specially interesting is the explanation of the evolution
suffered by tools and machinery in order to adapt the mines to new times
and that at the present are undoubtly the most valuable elements of the
whole settlement. Nowadays important policies are being carried out in
order to achieve a convenient reutilization of the settlement, specially
the interesting workers houses. |
