«Local versus Global. A 'new' challenge for the social economy»

The social economy is in the process of finding its roots, reasons, alliances and strength. Lately, the international Federations and organizations have started to realize the importance of the globalization.
Through a brief historical summary of the changes in the social economy and its potentials and limits, the author explains what he calls “Local globalization”.

The social economy reintroduces and updates the historical international institutions, considering its new role through the globalization. Without falling in an analysis that highlights only the positive or negative aspects, it is important to reinforce the presence of the social economy to re-establish the communication between North and South, West and East, center and periphery. It is also crucial to state the characteristics values of the social economy, such as democracy, solidarity the cooperation of the people, quality of life in a world looking for new political and ethical “élans”.

This article analyses the phenomenon of participatory organizations as an answer to present issues such as employment or environmental problems.
The article supports the idea of this phenomenon as something that is not new. Basically, it is the adaptation of the traditional social economy to the new needs and social conditions. In conclusion, from an economical perspective, the new social economy is not that new.

Assuming a new challenging situation, the farming cooperative should adapt a new strategy to be conscious of the new global environment where fundings for the agricultural sector are going to disappear. They need to increase the production in a competitive way. They need to increase the quality of products and promote the marketing.

The cooperatives can take advantage of the phenomenon called “rural tourism” in order to get funding to preserve the environment in rural areas.
In regards to non-profit institutions, they have an important role to play, fighting against the social inequalities that globalization promotes sometimes.

Latin American countries are affected the most by these consequences and the situation in those countries requires the creation of a common in the social economy.

Companies of social economy, according to their values and principles, have the social responsibility to avoid problems originated by the global economy in a postindustrial society.

Putting in practice the spirit of enterprise and cooperation requires sacrifice, however, it not only covers material needs, but it also makes the world more comfortable, supporting and humane.

The social economy is analysed in the context of local development. This is a theory, which is applied in a practical dimension, trying to provide quality to a territory.

Unemployment, environmental problems, quality of life are immediate challenges. The social economy, local development and territoriality try to give an answer to these challenges.

In this cause the local territory is not important. The company is the one that controls directly and promotes the development of the local territory. There is a transfer firm the company to the territory, but not from the territory to the company.

Like the enterprises, the non-profit entities must develop a system of accounts that allows them to meet their goals with an efficient management of resources.

It is important to know the values and characteristics of these organizations in order to know how to adapt the management techniques used by companies to them. This process has different stages, emphasizing two of them: planning and budget.

The new Spanish legislation on Foundations and Associations introduces advances in management control. This can cause serious difficulties in the fulfil ment of accountant obligations, especially for small organizations. This is why it would be advisable to establish a simplified accountant model (similar to the one provided by law) in order to facilitate the management.

The role that farming cooperatives are playing helps the negotiations and competitiveness of many farmers and cattle rising to improve in a market that is becoming more difficult and competitive.

Farming cooperatives improve their negotiations with customers and suppliers. In addition to that, they provide services, such as trainings, introduction of new technologies, and the spreading of knowledge in order to improve productivity.

These cooperatives provide innovations to the rural area, and at the same time, there is an improvement of the products. This benefits farmers and cattle raising.

Since this event, the “mate” phenomenon has been analyse the “mate” is a precious assesst in the “Mercosur”. Four countries are the components of this market: Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay.
The “mate” grows only 3 countries. These are: Argentina, Brazil and Paraguay. In Uruguay the mate does not grow, but this country is the biggest worldwide importer. .

The project “Sibarimar” in Guanabo, Cuba, tries to generate strategies through the municipal museum, the local government and population to get over the deterioration of the patrimonial properties.

In order to do that it creates a regime of protection, conservation, and use for all of those who have access to them.

The ”Sibarimar“ project has a viable vision for the future , and also, it has an active mission for the present. It maintains the perseverance of the local history and culture, even when there is a lack of financial resources.
